There are many things that go into creating a sampled instrument and many things that can go wrong, this book is a step by step guide through the process, from introducing sampling, where it begins to recording editing and using samples, providing much sought after detailed information on the actual process of sampling, creating sampled instruments as well as the different ways they can be used. The software used is the NN-XT a sampler that is a part of the Reason studio software and ProTools LE, however the material discussed is applicable and can be used with any sampler. The companion website has exclusive material including a comprehensive comparison of the different hardware software available, as well as audio examples and video clips from each stage of the process · Step by step practical approach to the process of sampling· Teaches how to create a sampling instrument· Companion website holds audio and video clips from each stage of the process and comprehensive comparisons of the different hardware software available

PREFACE

This project started as a quest to fi nd a book on sampling. When I couldn’t find any comprehensive texts on the creation of sampled instruments, I began to formulate the outline for this book. One of the most exciting parts about this project has been developing a presentation that takes advantage of really great technology. Besides the text and illustrations included here, we’ve prepared a thorough web resource. It includes video tutorials, audio examples, and current product descriptions/comparisons. We debated about whether to use a CD-ROM, but in the end the website seemed like a better long-term offering. The goal of the website is to give you the most value possible. Instead of including media content that would be outdated in a matter of months, we are offering the content in a continuously updatable format. In the text you will find graphic indicators that point toward content on the website. These are designed to help you move back and forth between the text and the website.

In addition to a basic explanation of sampling, there are sections on several related topics. From a section on how to connect different equipment, to good ear training practices, the goal has been to put the proper tools in your hands to create excellent sampled instruments and to use them well. If there is only one thing that I hope you get from this book, it is an understanding that simply knowing how to do something never replaces true skill. Knowledge will never replace wisdom. As you embark into the world of sampling, strive for excellence in sound quality and instrument implementation. I hope you have as much fun reading this as we had in writing it!
