What's new

If you're into mastering or just work with audio at a professional level, the new WaveLab 13 from Steinberg is definitely worth your time. This isn't just another incremental update—it's a genuine leap forward, especially if you're dealing with more than just stereo and need to handle immersive formats like Dolby Atmos. The developers finally packed everything engineers have been asking for into one place: smooth spatial audio workflows, powerful tools for final polish, and solid optimization so things don't crawl when projects get complex.

One of the most noticeable additions is full Dolby Atmos support right inside the montage workspace. You can now assemble entire albums from ADM files, add crossfades between tracks, and instantly preview how everything translates across formats—from plain stereo all the way up to 9.1.6. It's really handy that the visualization auto-syncs with the Dolby Atmos Renderer, so you're not constantly Alt-Tabbing between windows. And if you're worried about loudness compliance for streaming platforms, the built-in Loudness and TruePeak meters have you covered, helping you avoid rejection or unwanted normalization down the line.

Speaking of speed: if rendering multichannel projects used to feel like watching paint dry, the new multicore engine changes the game. Steinberg claims up to 10x faster rendering—meaning ten tracks now finish in roughly the time it used to take to process one. Sounds almost too good to be true, but in practice, it genuinely saves deadlines and sanity. Another small but mighty tweak: synchronized playback across tabs lets you A/B different master versions instantly, without scrubbing back and forth on the timeline.

Let's talk plugins for a second. MasterRig 2 isn't just a bundle of effects anymore—it's a proper mastering chain with a modern, resizable interface that adapts to any screen setup. Sidechain routing finally works the way you'd expect, and the EQ, compressor, and limiter modules got meaningful upgrades. Then there's VocalChain, which is a total lifesaver if you work with voice: de-essing, compression, reverb, EQ—all in one window, with smart defaults that get you 90% there without tweaking. And MixerDelay might seem niche, but if you're calibrating an Atmos setup, precise per-channel delay for phase coherence is one of those "invisible but essential" tools that makes the difference between good and great spatial imaging.

Overall, WaveLab 13 feels like software built by people who actually sit in the studio chair. There's no feature bloat for the sake of marketing—every tool has a clear purpose. Support for all the export formats you need (DDP, CD images, streaming presets for Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube), seamless VST 3 and ARA 2 integration, detailed analysis tools—it all adds up to a versatile, reliable solution for the final stage of production. If you haven't tried it yet, grabbing the trial is worth it, especially if your workflow regularly jumps between stereo deliverables and immersive formats. Sometimes the best upgrade isn't about having more options—it's about having the right ones, right when you need them.
