What's new
Italian company Acustica Audio has established itself significantly within the synthesizer market over the last year and a half by introducing its hybrid instrument Alice-9 equipped with oscillators featuring diverse sampled waveform types based on hardware counterparts.

Next up was the release of their synthesizer plugin called NOX, built upon the renowned Alice-9 engine and becoming the company's first model focused exclusively on specific music genres.

Acustica Audio NOX

Positioned by the manufacturer as the first thematically oriented hybrid creation aimed at producing tracks in EDM and melodic techno styles, NOX utilizes the powerful Alice-9 engine combined with the innovative MUST technology, blending sampling techniques, convolution methods, and analog modeling approaches. These enhancements contribute to achieving deeper tones and greater authenticity in sound reproduction.

This synthesizer features four Sample-Controlled Oscillators (SCO), whose waves evolve dynamically over time, replicating the organic characteristics typical of vintage analog gear. Two out of these oscillators offer unique start-of-sample settings, whereas the remaining pair serve as conventional multi-format oscillators.

After processing via the mixer stage, audio signals pass through dual filtering systems consisting of both a classic resonant filter and a non-resonant High Pass Filter (HPF). Modulation capabilities include two ADSR envelope generators along with two Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) units capable of adjustable delays. Although lacking a formal modulation matrix, direct assignment options allow users to individually customize modulation paths across elements such as Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCO), Voltage Controlled Filters (VCF), Amplifiers (VCA), etc.

Additional signal-processing modules provide advanced effects like saturation, compression, chorus, delay, reverb, and equalization.

Enhancing usability further, NOX incorporates morphing functionality enabling smooth transitions between key parameter configurations. Polyphonic control adheres fully to the MPE standard, providing precise expression possibilities during performances.

A noteworthy design aspect involves the inclusion of a double-layer graphical user interface. At the top level lies a simplified "slim" mode optimized for quick sound selection or tweaking-an intuitive play-like experience. With a single-click action, users transition seamlessly into an extended view granting detailed access to internal synthesis mechanics alongside comprehensive control over every setting.

In addition, the software comes bundled with 127 expertly crafted factory presets derived from 61 distinct SCO waveshapes. To aid in preset selection, each patch can be previewed prior to loading using specially tailored MIDI sequences, enhancing efficiency compared to earlier models limited solely to listening notes played at pitch C3.

Acustica Audio claims that NOX excels in delivering vibrant, mix-friendly tones coupled with fast-paced, clear, and musically driven workflow optimization.

At first glance, NOX appears somewhat similar to a modified version of Alice-9. While it's difficult to determine whether this iteration represents improvement or redundancy without thorough testing, early impressions highlight impressive sonic quality.

Comparable scenarios arise when considering certain ROMpler-style plugins sold repeatedly under different names merely due to changes in sound libraries. However, NOX introduces fresh waveforms, an updated visual layout, and retains functional consistency inherited from Alice-9.

Ultimately, NOX may appeal primarily to producers seeking accessible, versatile templates suitable for EDM and melodic techno compositions. Other musicians might find less innovation worth noting.

Currently priced at an attractive discounted rate of €65 (regular price €109), NOX supports modern platforms including macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows operating systems in formats compatible with VST3, AU, and AAX standards.
